Marcella Atencio Lopez has been practicing curanderismo for 52 years. She’s from the East Mountains and Sandia Park, and she was taught her methods by her grandmothers. Lately, she laughed, she’s been learning about curanderismo from the University of New Mexico, too, where Professor Cheo Torres initiated a series of courses at UNM.

When we spoke, she talked about the techniques she uses for healing, spirituality, and her spirit guides—ancestral curanderos and curanderas.

Hear more from our series on curanderismo, including an interview with Jane Rael and a feature on the practice.
