New Mexico has a statewide nursing shortage, however there is tremendous variation in different areas. For example, Sandoval, Bernalillo and Grant counties have more nurses than the US average of 9.9 per 1000 residents. Of New Mexico’s 33 counties, 22 fall below the national average – Hidalgo, Luna, Torrance and Socorro counties well below. Data is from the New Mexico Board of Nursing 2014 annual report.
