The state Auditor’s Office found that at the end of 2016 there were 4,638 untested sexual assault evidence kits in New Mexico. That is down from 5,460 last year. The Albuquerque Police Department had over half the state’s untested kits, with 3,476, which did not change from 2015. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department had the second highest total with nearly 500, followed by New Mexico State Police and Alamagordo Police Department.
This map was created with support from the New Mexico Community Data Collaborative and shows the latest data from the 2016 audit and the change from 2015. Many departments are working to address the backlog. The full report from the Auditor’s Office has more details.
