Local anti-poverty advocates are thrilled that House Republicans pulled their proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act Friday before a vote.

Sireesha Manne said the bill was nothing short of an attack on healthcare coverage. She’s the Supervising Attorney for Healthcare at the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty.

“It’s astonishing that after so many years of trying to repeal Obamacare, they would get to this point and not have the votes,” Manne said.

New Mexico would have faced some of the worst losses under the GOP measure Manne said. It would have frozen federal funding for Medicaid at 2016 levels. That program serves nearly half of the state’s population.

Manne said there are issues with Obamacare, like the high cost of prescription drugs, and those still have to be fixed.
